In a bizarre twist of irony, a pizza joint owned by Mexicans in the heart of a predominantly Italian neighborhood has been shut down for cultural appropriation. Local Italians claimed that the Mexican-owned establishment was stealing their heritage and culture by making pizza – a dish that is near and dear to the hearts of Italians. The owners were baffled by the decision, stating that pizza has become a staple dish all over the world, and that they were simply putting their own spin on it. Local authorities were surprised at the uproar caused by the neighboring Italians, but eventually gave in to their demands. The pizza joint has since been shut down, leaving many wondering if cultural appropriation is really as big of an issue as some people make it out to be.
